An experienced folk, rock, jazz, bluegrass, and classical musician with over 20 years of experience, Clayton will be graduating with his Bachelor’s in Classical Guitar from NEIU in December 2017. He recently retired from the Navy
Daniel Gomez: Guitar / Bass / Piano
Hailing from Peru, Daniel is not only a master of Latin Folklore, but also Flamenco, classical, jazz and contemporary music. He has a Bachelor in Guitar Performance from Northeastern University and a Masters in Guitar Performance with distinction from DePaul University. He has won scholarships based on performance in both Universities. He has performed at: Midwest Guitar Festival, DePaul- Northwestern-Northeastern Guitar Festival, Looptopia, Chicago World music Festival, Junta Hispania Latino Festival. He has contributed to 3 separate Latin music albums. He is an articulate and experienced teacher.
Jessica Brown: Voice
Jessica has played with a wide range of musicians across Chicagoland. With over 2.3 million fans on her facebook page, Jessica has ranked #1 on Reverbnation’s Chicago, National, Global Pop Charts and was awarded RAW Chicago’s “Musician of the Year” in 2013. She has been training as a singer since a young age, including at Columbia College, which she got her bachelor’s. A resident of Pleasant Prairie, she loves teaching students of all ages, with extensive experience teaching children under 5.
Kate Mathey: Piano
Kate has attended the School of Music in Moscow, Russia and has a Bachelor of Arts Degree from North Central College in Naperville Il. Kate’s musical achievements include running her own studio, teaching early childhood music at Old School Montessori in Grayslake Il, as well as participating in the Naperville Chorus. Kate has also worked with assisting adults with disabilities in recreational activities at the Special Recreation Association of Central Lake County . Kate speaks Russian and brings with her a well rounded world of experience to assist in developing the musical curiosities of future students. She focuses on In-Home lessons in the Grayslake / Gurnee / Libertyville area.
Dennis Mellen: Piano
Dennis started playing piano by ear at 8 years old and after graduating from high school, Dennis became a member of the Air Force Bands for 11 years. During this time he was involved with performances for Presidents Ford, Carter, and Reagan. Upon leaving the Air Force, Dennis played extensively in Anchorage, Alaska and Phoenix, Arizona, which led to extensive TV, radio, and studio recording performances. Dennis went on to become one of the most consistently working musicians in Las Vegas for over 25 years. Despite his success, Dennis has been a dedicated teacher throughout his career, bringing a real-world sensibility into the lesson studio. Dennis returned home to Gurnee to be closer to family. Natsha Siri: Cello and Music Theory; Piano, Flute, and Thai Classical String Instruments. (Waitlist Only)
Natsha (pronounced like “Gotcha!”) graduated from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) with a B.A. in Ethnomusicology and World Music studies. During her time at UCLA, she has performed a variety of non-western instruments with the Chinese music ensemble, Balinese Gamelan ensemble, Irish ensemble, Near East music ensemble, and the Thai Classical Orchestra at Wat Thai (Thai temple of Los Angeles).She is also an accomplished pianist, and with many years of experience playing cello, flute, and trombone, Natsha enjoys sharing her passion with students of all ages.
Jeni Schellenberg: Piano / Voice / Clarinet
A skilled vocalist, Jeni brings with her a Masters of Music in Education from VanderCook College of Music and a Bachelors of Arts in Primary and Secondary Education from Northeastern Illinois University, both with a concentration on vocal music. Kind and understanding, Jeni has over 13 years of a wide range of teaching experience, especially children in kindergarten through 5th grade and those with special needs.
Jonathan Cruz: Piano
A graduate of Waukegan High School, Jonathan went on to study music in Mexico at BUAP University and in the United States at Millikin University. He is a skilled performer, as well as a composer and songwriter. An experienced teacher, he helps students get a solid foundation on music theory and technique.

Roxanne Swanson: Piano and Violin
has been playing violin since the age of 9, when she began as a student in the Libertyville, IL Public Schools. A firm believer in the traditional approach to mastering violin skills and note reading from the very beginning, Roxanne uses the Sassmannshaus Method, which was developed by eminent German violin pedagogue Egon Sassmannshaus and has been used by generations of European stringed instrument players. The method stresses note reading and introduces techniques in a method that progresses students past first position playing in the first year. Roxanne also uses the Suzuki method to develop the student’s classical training. She is excited to work with students of all ages, and gauges instructional materials to the student’s age and ability. Roxanne is a violinist with the Waukegan Symphony Orchestra and also plays and teaches piano.
Darryl Purvis: Percussion and Piano
Darryl is one of our first and most popular teachers, has been teaching piano for over 10 years, and drums for 12. A church pianist for the past 15 years and dedicated family man (with many adopted children!), Darryl connects with students of all ages and backgrounds. A resident of Zion, Darryl has played a wide variety of styles, and is very adept at teaching students to play by ear, as well as through reading formal music.
Courtney McNally: Percussion
A passionate percussionist with years of experience in a wide range of groups, including as an instructor for Girls Rock, Courtney has proven to be an articulate and insightful instructor.
James Kole: Guitar (Acoustic and Electric), Ukulele and Bass Guitar (Waitlist Only)
James has been teaching guitar since 1973. After graduating from DePaul University, he has taught successfully at a variety of local music stores. He has traveled to China and around Asia to continue learning about guitar, from international virtuosos. He believes strongly that working in music helps to maintain focus and enhance the creative spirit that lies within us all. He specializes in Jazz, Classical, and Rock, but can teach more styles.
