Learning to play the violin can be a very rewarding process. We offer private violin lessons, sheet music for violin, accessories, strings, and more. If there’s anything we don’t have, we can usually order it and have it for you pretty quickly.
About our Violin Lessons
You can choose which of our great violin teachers you’d like to work with (read about them below). You work with the teachers to learn what YOU want to learn — whether it involves learning to read sheet music, play 3rd position, play faster etudes, complex classical pieces, or work in other genres. Students should be at least 5 years old, due to the finger strength required to properly press down the strings on the fretboard. Lessons are typically 30 minutes, at a set-time each week for $20 (click here for more options). For more about our violin lessons, view our Lesson Info page and our FAQ.
About our String Teachers
Roxanne Swanson, Violin Teacher, has been playing violin since the age of 9, when she began as a student in the Libertyville, IL Public Schools. A firm believer in the traditional approach to mastering violin skills and note reading from the very beginning, Roxanne uses the Sassmannshaus Method, which was developed by eminent German violin pedagogue Egon Sassmannshaus and has been used by generations of European stringed instrument players. The method stresses note reading and introduces techniques in a method that progresses students past first position playing in the first year. Roxanne also uses the Suzuki method to develop the student’s classical training. She is excited to work with students of all ages, and gauges instructional materials to the student’s age and ability. Roxanne is a violinist with the Waukegan Symphony Orchestra and also plays and teaches piano.
Emely Wang, Viola Teacher, has been playing music since the age of five when she first began taking piano lessons. Later in fourth grade, she began playing viola in the school orchestra. Besides playing for school orchestras, she has also played with community orchestras such as the Midwest Young Artists. In high school she was sitting next to the oboe soloist while performing Peter and the Wolf. She immediately fell in love with the oboe as well and began taking oboe lessons well into college. She performed as the oboe soloist in the College of Lake County’s concert band. She recently began teaching music lessons and is passionate about sharing her love for music with students of all ages.
Clare Carlson, Violin and Viola Teacher, graduated from Lake Forest College with a Bachelor’s in Music with an emphasis in violin performance. She has been playing the violin since the age of 6 and later, also learned viola. She graduated from the Zion Conservatory of Music’s Pre-Collegiate program. Clare was Concertmaster at Waukegan High School and at Lake Forest College. She performs regularly with the Lake Forest Civic Orchestra and FullScore Chamber Orchestra.
